Love it!! For lunch, it’s a great spot for a fresh, unique salad with grilled mahi. After enjoying that several times, I brought a group for dinner and it was terrific! All 7 of us loved it! After the rib appetizer, everyone wanted the last one so we had to have a contest for it! The 100% brisket burgers are fantastic. The onion rings are a must-try. The poke bowl hit the spot for a light eater and the mac and cheese loaded with pork worked for the heavy eater. Don’t miss the desserts. Opinions were split as to which dessert was the very best, but they were all contenders. I loved the creamy mango cheesecake—and I don’t even like cheesecake usually! The chocolate cake won rave reviews from the traditionalists and the banana cream pie redefines the dessert in a delicious way. And don’t miss the fun Hawaiian cocktails—Mai Tai’s and Blue Hawaiians, etc.
5 stars in a town brimming with excellent restaurants! Fun, festive, and they make their own pastrami! (Read on for tips on ordering) I wasn’t sure what to expect when I came to Huli Sue. In Hawaii I fell in love with traditional Hawaiian barbecue (plate lunch) foods including staples such as meats (kalua pork and bbq chicken or a local catch) macaroni salad, and Loco moco. This menu does many of the staples of Hawaiian barbecue well and also adds some elements, like their not-to-be-missed homemade pastrami. Tips on ordering: 1. Reuben (pastrami) spring rolls: We absolutely crave them! Yes, a Reuben with homemade pastrami is such a special item, but they have somehow made it more intensely flavorful by packing it into an eggroll. You have to sample them! In addition to the pastrami eggrolls, I also often order the Reuben sandwich, because I can’t get enough homemade pastrami. 2. Mai tais: Huli Sue serves some of my favorite cocktails in town. While I love the craft cocktails that many local places create (often creating their own bitters and shrubs, etc) this is a refreshing break into the world of old-fashioned, fun cocktails! But… the Mai tai is not without the craft element. This sublime drink captures all of the flavors and fun of a fruity tropical drink, but on top they have lilokoi foam (sort of like a passion fruit frothed egg foam, similar to what you would serve in a gin fizz, except it is flavored with passionfruit). What a beautiful combination. The drink does not take itself too seriously (yep, that’s a big slice of pineapple on the rim, and some of the other drinks have those little umbrellas) yet that foam element rises this mai tai above your typical celebratory Hawaiian drink, but without the stuffiness of some other craft cocktails. Just delightful! 3. poke “nachos“ which I was a bit hesitant to try until our server insisted we would love them, and we did. Forget whatever you know about nachos (the drippy cheese, the soggy chips) and substitute it with fresh sushi ingredients such as seaweed salad and poke and tomatoes and cucumbers. Instead of tortilla chips they have wonton chips, but they’re not greasy wontons, they are perfectly crisp. 4. Other menu standouts include the meaty mac & cheese, and the Loco Moco. Ive had a lot of traditional local moco, and this is quite good, and my teenager gave two thumbs up to the meaty mac & cheese. I’ll end with some items that are good, but not outstanding: I’ve had the garlic chili shrimp a couple of times and that was good. It feels a little heavy on the batter for me, but the shrimp are large and tasty. The tacos are good, but when my friends tried my pastrami sandwich, they preferred it. And the poke bowl is nice, but the poke nachos are more special. Bottom line: go to this place. Enjoy the cocktails, enjoy the unique offerings and the celebratory fun environment! Parking: There is street parking, but there is a garage nearby as well that is usually free for the first hour. It’s worth going into. Kid-friendliness: The atmosphere seems super fun and very unstuffy and perfect for kids!
Absolutely one of the best restaurants in Asheville!!
Huli Sue’s was so good we went to dinner twice there during our weekend visit to Asheville! Our server recommended the chicken fried ribs as a starter and we’re so happy she did! They were the BEST ribs we’ve ever had! For the entree, we both had the Huli Sue’s Chicken and that was amazing as well! The drinks were great too. We’ll definitely be making this a regular stop any time we’re in the area!
Huli Sue’s BBQ was amazing. Stopped in for a quick lunch and was extremely satisfied. The food was great, the service was fantastic. Sam was our waiter and he did an outstanding job. Highly recommend the brisket, the fried Brussels sprouts, and the fresh poke nachos. The coleslaw was the best we’ve ever tried. Honestly don’t think you can go wrong with anything you order! Parking: Parking was quick and easy. Was able to find a spot in front of the restaurant strip. Kid-friendliness: Very cool place and spacious for kids. Kids meals were an extremely generous portion (for toddlers). Wheelchair accessibility: Ramp inside restaurant makes it very accessible
Been here a couple of times and the food does not disappoint! Lots of interesting options to choose from. Have had the French dip and the fish & chips. Good portions, nicely flavored, along with great service. Always enjoy this place
Our server had fantastic recommendations. The portion sizes are huge, the wings are fantastic (only photo I got because we ate everything else so fast). The BBQ is here also great. The burgers are awesome, cornbread is equally great. It was a nice place to stop to get out of the snow. The drinks are amazing too. Overall awesome visit and would recommend to any traveler. Vegetarian options: Vegan options Wheelchair accessibility: There is a ramp inside as well to get people to the 2nd level
I have many favorite eateries in Asheville. I’m normally here for a show and it’s really tough to choose which ones I will dine at. This was my first time eating here and it may have just moved to top of the list! The Moink Smash Burger may be the best burger I’ve ever had. F’in yum y’all!
