Favourite pub to walk to on the canal, always great atmosphere when the sun is out
We originally went to the pub over 10 years ago and found it was lovely, however would never go again, or recommend it too! My husband decided to surprise me and my 3 kids, and took us for mothers day last weekend. The road leading up to the carpark was closed, which wasn't the pubs fault but did mean we had to go 10 minutes around. We got there and it was absolutely freezing inside. We were the only people in the pub the whole time. The service was very slow and inattentive. Our food came, and as you can see from the images, my daughters burger looked like it was made from scraps of burnt pieces of beef. It didn't even fill out the bun. Her chips looked like they were the small bits leftover when enough food isn't made. My other two children ordered chips which were a whopping £12 (when the online menu says they're £5), and no bigger then a mcdonald's medium portion. I got the vegetarian sweet potato roast. The sweet potato part was alright. But it came with, what I can only describe as, microwave veg. It looked like leftover pieces. And the gravy already poured all over. The roasted potatos weren't even properly roasted. My husband ordered the pie of the day. He said it was fine. It wasn't amazing or bad, he did the say there wasn't enough gravy and it was very watery - though he got it at the side and not pre poured over, like mine. I wouldn't recommend if you've not been before.
Walked down with the dog for a bite to eat. We ordered tapas bits, cheese dip, pulled pork chips & garlic prawns. I was pleased to find that dogs are now welcome in more of the pub, as I believe they were previously restricted to the small bar on the right. The service from the lady who looked after me was first class, welcoming, chatty & efficient, she was also the only member of staff which I could identify as staff. The other staff especially the tall lad were just dressed scruffily and you couldn’t tell if they were staff. So when he leaned over us to collect glasses it was a little uncomfortable until we realised he must be staff. A uniform or badge would be a great addition. And to be honest, at £17-19 for main dishes I would expect a little bit smarter or at least be able to identify the staff. The food was good aside from the prawns. They were £6.95 and we received 7 small prawns in a dish. Perfectly nice to eat, but these were really quite small and we both commented on the size and general quantity vs price. The only other grumble was that we waited over 40 mins for food, only 3 small dishes too. I’m sure we will be back, but just a few things that need a bit of attention.
Fabulous pub on the canal. We had lunch on a Tuesday, easy to get a table. Service was very friendly and food excellent. Great range of specials and food well priced.
Great little family pub! Fantastic atmosphere, fireplaces, great food! Best thing...dogs were allowed! Definitely be back.
