  • Wine Bargains (Dinner)

    • #1 - Ca' Bibbo Brut Rosé, NV, Piedmont, Italy

This is a very cool, and unusual sparkler. It’s made from the Brachetto grape and a gorgeous nose of fresh strawberries and flowers. That beautiful fruit is rich on the palate with nice freshness on the finish. It’s fantastic with charcuterie and appetizers. $14
      $15.00
    • #2 - Osel Bianco, 2023, Piedmont, Italy

A fun white blend from northern Italy. 80% Cortese (the Gavi grape) with the balance being Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The Cortese gives fresh apple fruit and some almond notes with the Chardonnay giving body and some structure and Sauvignon adding melon and citrus. It’s perfect for salads or oysters or more delicate fish or shellfish dishes. $14
      $14.00
    • #3 - Bonterra Pinot Gris, Mendocino, California

The folks at Bonterra were one of the first to market organically farmed wines nearly 30 years ago. This Pinot Gris is a new addition to the portfolio. Crisp, steely, Granny Smith apple skin notes intermixed with hints of orange and citrus jump from the glass of this light yet intense, relatively dry, fresh wine. It is medium-bodied, totally endearing, and best drunk over the next year. $13
      $13.00
    • #4 - Les Dauphins Grenache Blanc / Viognier, 2023, Vins de Mediterranee, France

Pretty floral, stone fruit, and honeysuckle notes in the medium bodied, bone dry white from vineyards just south of the Rhone Valley in Southern France. Pairs well with rotisserie chicken or salmon or with a cheese board. $12
      $12.00
    • #5 - Les Vins Breban "Winter en Provence" Rosé, 2024, Provence, France

Always one of the first rosés we see in the new year. It always gets us excited for spring! Lovely strawberry and apricot fruit, lots of floral notes and a fresh, crisp finish. Enjoy it over the next few months with egg dishes, steamed shrimp, salads (especially with some fruit element in them) and picnic fare. $15
      $15.00
    • #6 - Karl Josef Piesporter Michelberg Riesling Kabinett, 2022, Mosel, Germany

This knockout Riesling has notes of lime, white peach, a hint of pineapple and stony minerality. The bright acidity is perfectly balanced with a touch of sweetness and keeps it so incredibly fresh. We’ll enjoy it with steamed crabs all summer and it’s also great with sushi or spicy Asian dishes. $14
      $14.00
    • #7 - Silver Peak Pinot Noir, 2021, Sonoma, California

This was our first time tasting this wine and it was “thumbs up” from the first sip. It has all the classic cherry red fruit and lovely taffeta texture on the palate, and there’s that wonderful “deep forest after a rain” aroma that brings it all together. Fabulous with grilled salmon, roast duck or turkey burgers. $15
      $15.00
    • #8 - La Bacca Nerello Mascalese, 2021 Sicily, Italy

An import from the brilliant Paul Boutinot, made in the western part of Sicily. It’s a vibrant, youthful style of red from this grape which can be quite heavy. La Baca means “the berries” and it shows lots of red fruits, soft and juicy, ripe plum, gentle tannins and freshness on the finish. Fabulous with grilled tuna steaks. $12
      $12.00
    • #9 - Bodega Piedra Negra Malbec, 2022, Mendoza, Argentina

This stylish Malbec has excellent weight and structure with blackberry and boysenberry and a hint of balsamic. The oak aging shows through on the finish along with ripe tannin. Malbec loves roasted vegetable dishes of barbecued pork. $15
      $15.00
    • #10 - Hermanos Lurton Tempranillo, 2019 Toro, Spain

The Tempranillo grape is known as Tinto de Toro in this part of Spain. Toro almost always gives a more rustic style of Tempranillo that is so fun with lamb or game and definitely mushrooms. It’s ripe, dense and layered with flavors of blackberry, espresso and dusty cocoa. Was $21 Now $15
      $15.00
    • #11 - Château Haut-Florin, 2020, Bordeaux, France

Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in a classically styled wine. Medium bodied with plenty of dark cassis and plum fruit but also Bordeaux’s tell-tale sweet cigar box, pencil shavings and cedar. Great stuff for little money in a very easy to understand style. $12
      $12.00
    • #12 - Twenty Acres Cabernet Sauvignon, California

The Bogle family moved west to California and started farming in the 1870’s. They planted their first 20 acres of wine grapes in 1968 and this wine is a nod to that original planting. They blend 20% Petite Sirah into the Cabernet which gives the wine heft and muscle. Loaded with rich, ripe black cherry and blackberry fruit, big ripe tannin and some toasty oak and spice, this is a perfect match with burgers, steaks or barbecue. $13
      $13.00
    • *** Biutiful Cava Rosé NV, Penedes, Spain

This fresh, red fruit forward sparkling is made entirely from 40-50 year old Garnacha, so stylistically it’s a little different from other traditional Cavas. There’s no added dosage (sweetness), so this bone dry bubbly has loads of strawberry, apricot and tangerine fruit, with beautiful (or is it biutiful?) texture that’s silky and seamless. $15
      $15.00
    • *** Bonavita Branco, 2023, Lisbon, Portugal

A crisp & fresh white made with traditional Portuguese grapes including a touch of Muscat that gives the wine really beautiful floral and stone fruit flavors. It’s bone dry with a crisp finish but loaded with fruit. Super yummy with oysters, shrimp & crab.
      $14.00
*** Bonavita Branco, 2023, Lisbon, Portugal
    • *** Farina Soave, 2023, Veneto, Italy

Ahh Soave. It’s Pinot Grigio’s far more interesting neighbor. Made from the Garganega grape, it is a gorgeously refreshing, light-bodied effort exhibiting notes of citrus and honeyed grapefruit, wonderful texture, and amazing flavor for such a light, crispy, tangy wine. This is the quintessential offering for drinking with shellfish and fresh seafood.
      $15.00
    • *** Calvet Menetou Salon, 2021, Loire Valley, France

I know, I know. It’s $16. First time we’ve ever had a wine more than $15. I won’t make a habit of it. But this is a really outstanding deal. If you’re not familiar with Menetou Salon, it’s Sancerre’s neighbor. Same grape (Sauvignon Blanc), same soil, same weather. Smaller appellation and obviously less well known. But this is an absolute steal. It displays a lemon-lime, mineral, and white flower-scented nose. It is rich, has excellent depth to its white fruit, stone, acacia blossom, and citrus-flavored personality, and exhibits excellent purity of flavors. Was $24 Now $16
      $16.00
    • *** Kuranui Sauvignon Blanc, 2023, Marlborough, New Zealand

This classically styled New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc has passion fruit, green mango and gooseberry aromas with hints of black currant and fresh sage. Crisp, medium bodied with good concentration and a long finish, it should drink well with salads and fresh seafood over the next year or two.
      $13.00
    • *** Jaboulet Parallele 45 Blanc, 2023, Rhone Valley, France Organically farmed!

The Paul Jaboulet is legendary in the Rhone Valley. It was founded in 1834 and has been among the best estates in the Rhone. Since Caroline Frey took over in 2006, she has taken the winery to a whole new level. The wines are better than ever and they are now farming organically & biodynamically. The wine is a blend of Viognier, Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Clairette, and Marsanne. Ripe peach, pineapple, honeysuckle and a touch of tangerine all emerge from this medium-bodied, fresh and crisp white that has beautiful intensity and length.
      $14.00
    • *** Domaine de Cassagnoles Côtes de Gascogne, 2023, Southwest, France

Gascony is a beautiful part of Southwest France. Vineyards here grow grapes for Armagnac, Cognac’s lesser known cousin. In fact, the Cardeillac family has been making wine and Armagnac here for centuries. This lovely wine is a blend of Colombard, Ugni Blanc, Gros Manseng & Sauvignon Blanc, all traditional Gascony grape varieties. The wine is fresh with notes of honeydew, white flowers, citrus zest and honeysuckle. It’s a great way to start a dinner party as it pairs with seafood, salads, & lighter pasta dishes.
      $13.00
    • ***Site Riesling, 2022, Mosel, Germany

Aromas & flavors of lime zest, peach & spiced tea and stony minerality. Dry, fruit forward and beautifully balanced, it’s perfect for holiday gatherings, party appetizers or Asian cuisine. It has 11.5% alcohol, so just the smallest touch of sweetness that is perfectly balanced by the bright acidity of the Mosel.
      $13.00
      ***Site Riesling, 2022, Mosel, Germany
    • *** J. Bookwalter “Readers” Chardonnay, 2023, Columbia Valley, Washington

Another classic from our dear friend John Bookwalter. Their Readers series are just stellar values. This Chardonnay is sourced from the Gamache Vineyard, planted in 1982. It fermented predominantly in stainless steel, although 30% of the wine was fermented in neutral French Oak barrels. No malolactic fermentation retains the freshness of the fruit. It’s loaded with sweet citrus, juicy peach, golden apple, and a touch of vanilla crème. There’s a lingering mouthwatering finish with notes of lemon and white tea. $15
      $15.00
    • *** Tassajara Chardonnay, 2022, Monterey, California

The name Tassajara comes from the famed Tassajara Hot Springs, where legend has it the Indigenous peoples would go for renewing spiritual energy. From vineyards close to the ocean in Monterey, the wine has flavors of yellow apple, stone fruit & pear, accented by hints of vanilla & caramel. On the palate, it is medium bodied, crisp & balanced with bright fruit & lingering notes of sweet oak on the finish.
      $15.00
    • *** Faustino "Art Collection" Viura Chardonnay, 2022, Rioja, Spain

Here’s a very cool blend from a very old Rioja producer. Viura is a traditional lighter bodied wine from Rioja and eastern Spain which brings notes of citrus and melon. The Chardonnay brings body as well as some pineapple and apple fruit. All fermented in stainless steel which keeps it light on its feet but has some buttery notes from malolactic fermentation.
      $14.00
*** Faustino "Art Collection" Viura Chardonnay, 2022, Rioja, Spain
    • ***J.M. Aujoux Beaujolais Nouveau, 2024, Burgundy, France

From our dear friends at Aujoux, here’s a look at the first release from the heralded 2024 vintage in Burgundy. This year’s Nouveau is fresh and bright with pretty flavors of strawberry, cranberry and spice. It will be an all around crowd pleaser at any holiday event.
      $15.00
***J.M. Aujoux Beaujolais Nouveau, 2024, Burgundy, France
    • *** Rascal Pinot Noir, 2023, Oregon

When we are choosing wines for this value list, great quality & value are paramount. But when there’s a great cause as well, we move them to the front of the line. A portion of the proceeds from all of their wines supports dog rescue organizations and shelters. Bright cherry and cranberry fruit, lovely spice and dusty cocoa notes and a that beautiful texture that defines great Pinot Noir. $14
      $14.00
    • *** Dry Canyon Pinot Noir, 2022, California

A delicious, easy-drinking Pinot Noir that really delivers, this Pinot Noir comes mostly from the Central Valley. Steve Schaefer and his family have been farming vineyards there for over 30 years. Giving up lots of juicy Bing cherry, strawberry & spice, this medium bodied, rounded, well-made and thoroughly enjoyable effort will drink well for 2-3 years. It's a killer value.
      $12.00
    • *** Markstone Pinot Noir, California

Pinot Noir from California at this price point (that actually tastes delicious) is very difficult to find. Markstone definitely delivers. It’s a soft and juicy style of Pinot Noir with no hard edges and lots of cherry, plum, dusty cocoa and spice flavors. It is brilliant with salmon or swordfish (especially grilled) or any mushroom dishes.
      $10.00
      *** Markstone Pinot Noir, California
    • *** Carta da Fritapreta Tinto, 2020, Alentejano, Portugal

Winemaker António Maçanita’s estate near the ancient Roman city of Evora is making amazing wines and changing the face of this region long known for mostly commercial wineries. He farms organically, hand harvests and uses native yeast for all of his wines. This blend is 50% Aragonez (Tempranillo), 30% Touriga Nacional, & 20% Alicante Bouschet. Violets and blackberries on the nose with some darker fruit and spice on the palate. Tannins are ripe and fully integrated and it’s showing beautifully now with a couple of years of bottle age. Enjoy with roasts, rotisserie chicken and burgers. Was $20 - Now $14
      $14.00
*** Carta da Fritapreta Tinto, 2020, Alentejano, Portugal
    • *** Melini Chianti, 2023, Tuscany, Italy

This Chianti is another terrific, value-priced red. Sweet cherries, flowers and spices are some of the notes that jump from the glass in this vinous, fruit-forward Chianti. It’s the perfect Tuesday night dinner red. Food pairing-wise; Chianti is great with tomato based sauces. Pizza is a natural and all classic Italian fare.
      $11.00
    • *** Maison Les Alexandrins Syrah, 2022, Vin de France

This is Syrah and a splash of Viognier co-fermented from a vineyard just outside the northern Rhone Valley. As such, it gets labeled as Vin de France although you’re just a stone’s throw from the famous vineyards of Hermitage. That’s great news for us as it keeps the price down. Currant and blackberry fruit, pepper and juniper spice and ripe tannin makes this deliciously drinkable and an excellent pairing for barbecue & burgers.
      $15.00
    • *** Flor de Goda Garnacha, 2023, Campo de Borja, Spain

Some of the oldest Garnacha vines in all of Spain are in Campo de Borja, and it’s honestly our favorite expression of this yummy grape. It’s an easy to understand, jammy, juicy wine with gobs of strawberry fruit, some cracked pepper and aromas of violets. Enjoy it over the next 5 years with burgers and barbecued or duck, wild game, or lamb.
      $14.00
    • *** Perrin "Nature" Cotes du Rhone, 2021, Rhone Valley, France

The Perrin brothers from Chateau de Beaucastel craft this beauty from vineyards in the Southern Rhone. It’s a 50/50 split of Grenache and Syrah that was raised all in stainless steel tanks. Strawberries, raspberries, dried herbs and dusty cocoa characteristics all emerge from the medium-bodied, rich, chewy Southern Rhône that has good freshness and sweet tannin. It’s a terrific Côtes du Rhône to drink over the coming 4-5 years. Was $17 - Now $14
      $14.00
*** Perrin "Nature" Cotes du Rhone, 2021, Rhone Valley, France
    • *** Sanssouci Le Rouge, 2021, Languedoc, France

The French expression sans-souci means “without a care.” Le Rouge is a classic blend of Syrah and Grenache. It shows the lush red fruits and floral character that are typical of Grenache, together with the brambly blackberry and dark fruits of Syrah. The wine is concentrated and plush on the palate, with ripe, spicy fruit and integrated tannins. $15
      $15.00
    • *** Santa Wine Company "Little Helper" Red, 2022, California

This perennial favorite is back!! This year’s blend is Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc & Pinot Noir. It’s a fun, fruit forward wine with a dark purple color, as well as a super nose of cherries, black currants, pepper, spice, and dusty cocoa notes. Full-bodied and richly-extracted, with copious quantities of berry fruit, excellent purity, and an expansive, silky-textured finish.
      $14.00
*** Santa Wine Company "Little Helper" Red, 2022, California
    • *** Indaba Mosaic Red Blend, 2022, Western Cape, South Africa

This blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petit Verdot is not the most spectacular wine you’ll likely taste this year, but it is darn delicious, easy to understand and very easy on the wallet. It is fresh and bright with black raspberry, wild strawberry and cherry. Medium-bodied, the blend offers a balanced structure with a juicy frame that is open-knit and ready to go with grilled chicken, stir fry and meatloaf.
      $9.00
    • *** Bieler "Born to Run" Cabernet Sauvignon, Washington & California

Charles Bieler has always been a bit of a rule breaker. When he was 22 and had just finished school, he bought a 1965 Cadillac, painted it pink and drove around the west coast selling his father’s rosé out of the trunk. That was 20 years ago, and now Charles is a well established winemaker in his own right. This wine is blend of fruit from Columbia Valley near Red Mountain and a vineyard on the west side of Lodi. It has great structure but big, jammy rich fruit. Great for a big steak or burgers or barbecue.
      $12.00

I know, I know. It’s $16. First time we’ve ever had a wine more than $15. I won’t make a habit of it. But this is a really outstanding deal. If you’re not familiar with Menetou Salon, it’s Sancerre’s neighbor. Same grape (Sauvignon Blanc), same soil, same weather. Smaller appellation and obviously less well known. But this is an absolute steal. It displays a lemon-lime, mineral, and white flower-scented nose. Bright cherry and cranberry fruit, lovely spice and dusty cocoa notes and a that beautiful texture that defines great Pinot Noir. $14

Violets and blackberries on the nose with some darker fruit and spice on the palate. Tannins are ripe and fully integrated and it’s showing beautifully now with a couple of years of bottle age.
