This has been my regular Safeway for over 3 years. I would give it 4 stars overall; I like the staff, the app, and I like the store. This review concerns one very poor customer service task with manager Michael. A digital coupon did not work at checkout (this happens). It was for 2 frozen pizzas. The register staff had trouble, called in a second (also perplexed), and then they called over a manager, Mike. Rather than solve the problem, Mike insists that the coupon does not apply. He asks several times to see the "deals" on my phone. No prob, easy each time. We see that these exact two pizzas are, in fact, included among the 17 "Eligible Items" in this deal / coupon. However, Mike announces that one of these is not included. I show him again (3rd time) that it is shown as one of the 17 pizzas "eligible". Mike then insists that the 17 listed as "Eligible Items (17)", does not matter - the only 2 that are in the coupon are the 2 at the thumbnail photo at page top. What is super infuriating is that Mike is, either (1) ignorant of how to use the Safeway app and/or (2) knew he was wrong, but wanted to be somewhere else (intentionally feigning stupidity to achieve a quick, but incorrect, end). He made his dumb proclamation, and walked away. Now that adds cowardly and insulting to the dumb.
My solution was to return the two pizzas. Then I went and bought the same 2 pizzas. Second time the digital coupon worked.
Attached are: (1) the screenshot of the app page - remember - the list of 17 eligible items are not "eligible" (according to Mike, only the 2 types in the thumbnail upper right - and he refused to look again after his proclamation, and after having me review the "deals in the app", at least 3 times).
(2) the receipt showing that these two are eligible, and the coupon worked.
So, Michael did not solve a problem, he created new ones, and created an insulted and mistreated customer. I stand by my analysis of dumb (about the app) and cowardly (for walking away imperially, like that would end it).
Boooooooo!
I visited today to grab something for lunch and grab some cashews, three employees were talking around shipments one of them looks kind manager. One employee answer my question showed me where are they however whole shelf was blocked by watermelon pallet. None of them offer me help I was struggling looking for unsalted cashews. Then I left and grab salad and checked out by the door and employee name Crystal was very pleasant smiling offer me if I need fork or spoon for my lunch. She made my bad experience to a great. God bless her soul she needs appreciation😊🙏🏼
Safeway always has very good quality products, this store opens very early and closes very late so you can come before or after work to buy what you need. Whether for breakfast or dinner.
Friendly and responsive staff. Unlike the big box grocery stores popping up in Bethesda, shopping at Safeway is easy. You can navigate efficiently to find what you need. There is plenty of parking without huge underground parking lots with elevators. The only suggestion: In addition to large grocery carts please have some small carts too.
If I could give zero stars I would. Dirty, poorly stocked, and with expired looking and unappetizing deli items. The employee that was standing by the self check out had such a nasty attitude to boot.
Stock policy on sale products and other items as well need to be revised urgently since it is really hard to find the items on sale at this store continuously. Furthermore, problem solving approach of the night shift manager is very disruptive.
Functional grocery store. Sandwiches are routinely mislabeled, so your selection is likely to be a surprise.
