When I booked online I reserved “upstairs dining room”, which I guess wasn’t available because we were sat downstairs. Bread and butter were both served fridge cold, so very difficult to spread. We had about 2 bites each of the phyllo brie app and sent it back (the sauce was kind of bitter and weird), and the waiter left it on our bill which I found strange. Mains were ok, I had a seafood fettuccine which was good but the portion was small and it was light on the seafood. My partner had the chicken which she found chewy and the veg to be under seasoned, but she did like the sauce. Tiramisu was pretty good. Drinks were good but bar service was a little slow. Our waiter was brutal. Very inefficient and lack of attention. Not served water until we asked for it when our mains came and were never offered a refill, he knew next to nothing about the menu or drinks (could not answer any questions), and seemed irritated when my parter asked for a knife to cut her chicken. The restaurant itself was cold and the dreary piano music didn’t help the atmosphere much. I paid our $200 bill and we then went up the road to No. 4 where we had another round of food and drinks and left much happier. I’d say skip this one.

The food is delicious and the service was superb. We couldn’t have asked for a better server! The duck nachos and bread served with pumpkin pie butter were especially good!

Food was great. I bought gift cards from Costco, I couldn't understand why they didn't give change on the gift cards. it shouldn't matter were i bought them. This should not be there policy.

A friend and I stayed in the rooms upstairs, and after a long day of traveling from Vancouver, decided to head down to the bar after dropping stuff off in our room. I'm so glad we did! I had potato skins and the chicken wings. They were very tasty, and Gluten-free! I also had a fair amount of wine. :D The man behind the bar that night was attentive and kind (I think he even laughed at one of my jokes= very kind). As he grew up in the area, he also had a lot of fantastic recommendations. Some words about Blair: "Not only is Blair really smart, but he's also super kind and generous. I've heard him referred to as 'saintly' and I wouldn't argue." I would suggest trying whatever drink/cocktail special they have when you're there. They're concoction wizards! For a few other nights, we had Ian serving us. He was also kind and attentive, and withstood friendly roasting quite well. I looked forward to our evenings downstairs at Magnum & Steins. Other staff members, and especially the manager, Kelly, really made us feel like family. It was so lovely, and they're a major part of why I can't wait to head back to St. John's. I could probably write a novel, but I'll settle for this short story. ❤️

It was getting late and we were hungry walk-ins. It took a few moments to get seated. The server was efficient. It was clean and quiet enough to have a conversation. A nice retreat from the noise of George St. We really enjoyed our meals of pan-fried cod.

Although the servers were great the food nor the location was up to par. We were initially seated in the dining room and that area was nice and clean but we opted to move to the patio before we actually had a look at it. The patio seating area is very small and in need of a cleaning or paint job as it looks like it hasn't had any work done in years. Our first seat had water dripping on us from an AC unit positioned above the table and even after we moved it was very uncomfortable from the home made picnic style seating. We ordered the Duck nachos as we have had them in the past and those were great, but the real issue was in the grilled meat platter. Most of the platter was OK but had very little seasoning. The chicken on the other hand was burnt on the outside but raw in the middle. (It's takes a skilled cook to pull that off) Unfortunately we did not notice the raw chicken until after we had eaten some of it. This resulted in my wife getting food poisoning and very sick later that night. We did bring the raw chicken to the servers attention and nothing was done other then stating "that must have been a thick piece". This is not acceptable but as we we're not sick at that time we let it go. For a main we had the salt and vinegar fish because we have had that in the past and loved it. This time however it seems that the recipe had changed and though it still tasted fine there was no taste of salt and vinegar. To say this was a disappointing anniversary dinner is un understatement and we have no plans to ever return.
