Very good beer as always. I dont know if the chef has changed, or there was a replacement when we went for lunch, but the food has gone downhill. Schnitzel that resembled, and tasted like a leather sole, glutinous mushroom sauce that even Campbells mushroom soup could have outdone. Spatzle that were overcooked if thats possible. Very disappointing. Dont know if this was just a bad day, but it didnt used to be so mediocre.
The family organized a birthday celebration here that included about 11 of us. We were able to receive a long table outdoors and ordered our stuff family style, sans the beers of course. The food was amazing, the staff attentive and friendly, and the background music was killer. It was not what as expected a German hofbrau, but a lot of retro 80s music that were not completely popular but brought back a ton of nostalgia. Pro tip: order the larger size of the bier steins vs the smaller pint-sized steins. Order all the stuff. If you can’t finish them, take em home. You have to try everything! Also, beware of the residents in the building across the street. The residents there are shady as heck due to the building being a Section 8 housing that houses a lot of the city’s mentally ill. They are seen roaming outside on the streets in front of the restaurant at times. Best to not make eye contact or give while they’re panhandling.
A small and a German authentic place with decent collection of German beers and food. I must try if you're in the area, the service was very friendly as well.
We dined in on a rainy weekend so sadly couldn’t enjoy the outdoor area. Inside is akin to a cozy living room because it’s a converted Victorian home, and the service was efficient. I do recommend a reservation though since space is limited. The beer selection is great, but the schnitzel was unfortunately dry that night. Everything else (cucumber salad, cheese spatzle) was great. We will have to try this place again.
