My friend and I drove 110 miles just to eat at Jack in the Box. We both lived out west for many years. This trip down memory lane was worth it! Actually, we visited 2 Jack in the Box restaurants as the first one didn't have tacos available. Breakfast croissant, mini tacos, Jumbo Jack with cheese, then . Saw the Jack Steak is no longer a menu item.
My first 2 reviews don't paint a favorable picture of this Jack in the Box. They were snarky, but honest reflections of how I felt. I'm not sure why I decided to go again tonight. (It was the offer of a $2 fish sandwich.) My expectations were not high and if it had sucked, I would not have updated my review, because I would have considered it my fault for going again. But, I really like McDonald's fish sandwiches and they are objectively the worst fast food fish on the market. I'm very glad to say that I was pleasantly surprised. The fish sandwich was hot and fresh. The breading, though not thick at all, was so crispy. That and the lettuce gave a wonderful variety of textures that made it clearly superior to McDonald's. I wish the app gave an option to add pickles, for me that would have made it even better, but I have to judge what they make and even without pickles, this sandwich impressed me. Does one good sandwich cancel out my previous disappointments? Not entirely, so I will leave my previous reviews below, but to give credit where it is due, I did up my rating from 3 stars to 4. I might even go back to try something else off the menu. "Jack in the Box is completely edible and reasonably priced. It is what school lunch tries to be. Not great, but most people probably won't mind eating it." This was my original review from 3 years ago. I completely forgot that I had been here and went again today. T-mobile had a deal for a free Jumbo Jack with drink purchase. It let you use the $1 Dr. Pepper as the drink which made the overwhelmingly meh burger worth it, but if I had to pay full price I would have felt very disappointed. For a sandwich that is supposedly "Jumbo" it was surprisingly small. Size-wise I would put it on part with a Wendy's Jr. Deluxe hamburger, but with maybe a little more meat. The tomato was over-ripe and bland while the onions were dry and extra "oniony". Today just reinforced the utterly forgettable impression that they left to begin with, except that 3 years ago apparently the prices seemed reasonable and that is no longer the case. To give credit where it is due, I also ordered onion rings. They were cooked perfectly, a beautiful color, crispy and not oily in the least. If they had been seasoned or salted at all, I would even say that they tasted good, unfortunately as they were the onion rings came across as bland. Yet again the food at Jack in the Box was not bad, just underwhelming and over priced for what you get. Who knows, maybe in a few more years, I will forget about this place and end up trying it again, but I don't think I will miss much in the mean time and neither will you. If you are hungry and ready for a quick meal, there are a few places near by, pick any of them instead.
