Gruene River Grill

The food and atmosphere was amazing, but the service could've been a little better.

When rating restaurants, there are 3 criteria. Food, Service and Cleanliness (Google has it as Atmosphere) So if all 3 are as expected, or par for the course, I will rate the restaurant 4 Stars. If one of them is below, the other 2 need to be above to pick up the slack. That is my standard. We came in at exactly 5:00. Apparently that is when they change shifts. We sat for 15 minutes before anyone even came to our table. And that is the only negative thing I can say about our experience today. The food was way better than we expected it to be. Hot and fresh and had excellent presentation. The service After the flub at the beginning was also outstanding. Ashley helped us and was very personable and asked us questions and told us about herself. It was very good. One thing that stood out as above average was the prices. They were very reasonable for what we got.

It's one of my favorite places. My gf and I drive an hour and a half just to have dates here.

Had shrimp and grits, the best! Went with a group of ladies and everyone enjoyed their food. The service and drinks were great! Highly recommend

This is by far one of my favorite restaurants in Gruene. The food, service and atmosphere are great. I really like the outdoor balcony that overlooks the river below.

This has typically been our go-to birthday/anniversary place for last couple of years. Food has always been exceptional, as is the service. However, today was way off the mark. My wife and I always order the filet Gorgonzola with garlic mashed potatoes and green beans. The portions were rather small in comparison to previous visits and I am not sure how they thought what they served as green beans was acceptable. Normally, green beans are fresh crisp and have a spicy seasoning. What we were served appeared to be yesterday's leftover beans mixed with some fresh beans with no seasoning. The mashed Potatoes didn't taste like there was any garlic in them or any seasoning. This was a very disappointing birthday dinner. I expect more out of the Gruene River Grill and hope this was just a one off. We almost went to another restaurant, not that GRG is bad, just wanted to try something different. After today's meal, kind of wish we had.

Update* Nope. Food quality has gone down dramatically. We had green beans and yesterday's overcooked "brown" beans on both my plate and my husband's. Filet with gorgonzola was cooked correctly but flavorless, garlic mashed potatoes were just mashed potatoes. The beans used to be really spicy. No spice this time. It was my husband's birthday and we almost went to the grist mill, to try it out, but I convinced him to come here as we usually do. Not again. We're definitely going somewhere else next time we want a special, celebratory meal. Bunch of kids from prom, too. Which isn't the restaurant's fault but maybe what was off with the quality. Maybe they were overworked. Was just underwhelming. Had a great waitress and good time as a family, but we're going somewhere else next time. Old review* This place always has a line, come early. Service was slow even though we came early. We weren't served until 45 minutes after we were seated. Our waitress forgot my iced tea, and I had to reorder it. She got queso sauce on the plate of my son's chocolate cake and still served it like that. I'm sure, like everywhere else they are short staffed. Beyond all of the little hiccups, the food is beyond excellent and it is our restaurant of choice for birthdays. We're always going to come back for the food, but wow, prices are crazy and staff must be short.
