If you want good food, and a vibe like your aunties kitchen, this is the place for you! It was a lovely reminder that you can taste a little piece of home anywhere you go. Will definitely be coming back!
A gem in a painfully dying brand of businesses in DC, where tofu parlors and dog parks have replaced great, cultural black havens.
The seafood egg rolls, homemade duck sauce, and mac n cheese *chef's kiss. Customer service impeccable!
I was passing through the area with my daughter and we stopped by for supper. Everything we ate was on point! Greens, meatloaf, corn bread, brisket, sweet potato pie, and mashed potatoes were all out of this world. While a lot of places serve this type of food, Charlene's was definitely a cut above the rest. A mother/son duo run the place and after eating their food and talking with the chef, you can see they have pride in their craft and are not cutting corners. Service was great too-we will be back!
THE FOOD IS GOOD. I HAPPENED TO GO ON A QUIET NIGHT. IT'S A SMALL PLACE. NICE ATMOSPHERE. IT'S GOOD FOR AN EASY DATE NIGHT OR A GATHERING OF THREE OR FOUR FRIENDS. OTHER REVIEWS MADE COMMENTS ABOUT THE STAIRS LEADING TO THE DOOR. IT'S 37 STEPS FROM THE STREET TO THE UPSTAIRS DINING AREA. THE FOOD WAS SERVED IN "TO GO" CONTAINERS. I DON'T KNOW IF THAT'S EVERY NIGHT. IT SAVED THE TROUBLE OF HAVING TO ASK FOR CONTAINERS. IF THAT SORT OF THING BOTHERS YOU, IT COULD BE A TURN OFF. OVERALL, A NICE PLACE. 4.25. Parking: DEPENDING ON WHAT TIME YOU GO TO THIS PLACE, YOU WILL HAVE TO FEED THE METER OR USE THE MUNICIPAL LOT. FINDING FREE PARKING MAY BE CHALLENGING. I really enjoyed Charlene's Bar & Grill. Everything was great !! . I look forward to visiting it again.
Best soul food I've had in DC in a long time.
