Great old pub with lots of history. Excellent range of beers and good orderly service even when it got very busy
Arrived with a dinner reservation, we were quite lost due to the many entrances and narrow pathways but Julian kindly amidst the busy pace showed us to our table and guided through the ordering process. Queue seemed long and even though there barely was any reception, we could connect to the wifi and place our orders through the app. Food was quickly served and staff checked back to make sure our food was alright. the duck hash and eton mess were delicious
A must check out if you are in Oxford! Bill Clinton vaped here (but did not inhale) and prior Australian Prime minister were here and so should we!!!!
We made reservations on line as it apparently gets very busy so that worked well. Most of the seating appears to be outside or partial patio set ups. We were lucky to be set at a table inside where it was warm. We were there on a Sunday so the roast dinner was a feature and two of our party had the sirloin roast with Yorkshire pudding and veggies but the walnut Wellington that went by looked amazing! I had fish and chips which were good. The fish was lightly battered and as I am gluten sensitive, it was easy to take most of that off and enjoy the fish which was nice and hot. Due to the size of the place, by the time the meal gets to you, not much else is hot. It was served with both grilled lemon and tartar sauce, peas, chips and pea shoots. It was tasty. The other order was for a chicken burger. Three of us had cider but I regret not asking for a dry option. Without a server, you are limited. The ordering app didn’t seem to work for us despite trying so we lined up at the bar to place the order for our table and carried our own drinks back. The food came quite quickly and accurately. Interesting spot to try for sure but I was glad our neice who is a student at Oxford knew the way or it would be a bit tricky to find.
Fantastic service and great food. I recommend the raclette pie and then Eton mess. Truly indulgent!
I popped into the Turf Tavern earlier on this week for lunch with a friend. All the staff were very talkative and friendly, and the place itself was quaint and cosy. A wonderful pub in a gorgeous historic setting, made better by their fantastic team! Thank you so much - we will be back!
