Any place that has bold lit interior signage bragging they are “Damn Good” instantly gets my attention. It’s that edgy attitude that keeps me coming back to Torchy’s, and generally speaking, I am no fan of chain restaurants. It’s just that in a world of many a bland taco chain, Austin-based Torchy’s pushes the needle on taco ingredients and condiments. That’s another way of saying “they break the rules.” This time I chose the Fried Avocado Tacos, but switched out the creamy poblano sauce for a salsa verde, and had them hold the Cheddar Jack Cheese. Two is usually enough for me, along with a tall glass of local craft beer. I am also a fan of the MoFaux, a vegetarian taco with Beyond Beef, but supply chain issues (Really? Again?) found them without this essential ingredient. Maybe next time, they wished me. Still, Torchy’s is as much a taqueria that serves beer, as it is a bar that sells tacos. It’s easy to spot the difference in clientele based on where they are seated. I usually choose the bar, and bring a book or laptop to get things done. Two thumbs up to Torchy’s for boldly going where most taquerias would never consider. They truly are Damn Good. Vegetarian options: Vegetarian options are available! Hold the cheese and certain condiments to make it vegan.
