My favorite place in Virginia, without a doubt. Every time I go everyone is smiling and having fun. Food is amazing! Love every dish they have. Drinks are also incredible.
The place is so good and so special to us that we did our wedding there.
We always look forward to coming back to Thompson Italian.
Thanks for everything!!
Hadn't been there in a while but WOW, the food is still as amazing as when they first opened! Went with my brother who was here for a visit...he loved the Rigatoni Bolognese and I had the Papardelle with Wild Boar...both were delish - hearty and so very flavorful! It was late so we skipped appetizers and dessert...but forgot to mention the foccacia...never disappoints...pillowy soft center with perfect crust...divine!
Probably the best pasta on this side of the Potomac
This was a wonderful dining experience. Strongly recommend you make reservations as the venue is not very large and fills up.
Excellent, modern Italian cuisine. The pastas and desserts, especially, are outstanding. Always warm, friendly service.
The staff was very friendly. We went right when they opened so it wasn’t terribly busy. The outside patio was very cute. Staff was also super attentive and our waters were always full.
I had a Chicory Salad and my mom had the an eggplant salad. We shared the fried mozzarella which was to die for! I had their summer berry tiramisu. That was amazing it was very light and refreshing. I had a glass of Moscato wine with my dinner. It was very food and paired well with my meal.
Our waiter (wish I could remember his name) was super friendly and attentive.
By far the best Italian restaurant in Virginia. I have been to this restaurant many times now. It’s cozy and has good variety of dishes to choose from. They also offer some great options for vegetarians. Loved their pistachio icecream which is made in-house.
Great dining experience and phenomenal menu!
Food was just okay, the service was outstanding. The staff were attentive, friendly, and made the experience enjoyable. If you value excellent service, this place is worth a visit.
The DC region is devoid of great Italian restaurants. As a result, a lot of mediocre Italian joints here are overrated. Thompson Italian is no exception. It has made a lot of lists lately, so we had to try it. The concept, location, and atmosphere are great. But my party of five did not find the food and drink to be worth the price. Here is a breakdown of the experience.
• 4 cocktails, 2 glasses of wine, 4 apps, 5 pastas = $334 before tip
• Cocktails $17+ and small to medium pours
• Eggplant salad was good. Spicy Meatball app lacked flavor. Garlic bread was ok. Grilled calamari was not what I expected (it was a salad, and the calamari was not cooked well).
• Time from reservation to mains served: 1hr 20min
• No server engagement after apps were served (we had to flag someone down to get grated parmesan)
• Pasta was perfectly al dente; sauces were not remarkable
• Portion sizes were small (zero leftovers)
• Restaurant was very loud. Not normally something I mind, but you really can only hear the person next to you. It's better for a couple vs a group.
• Overall, there was no positive "wow" moment, which is what you'd expect given the hype and prices for this place.
Compared to what we ate at Thompson, we have made far better Italian food at home by following great recipes and buying quality ingredients. This is our default when crave Italian as we have yet to find a great place in DC/NoVa to make it worth the visit. The search continues.
What a nice surprise this was. From the outside, it looked closed, but we chose to cross the street and check. Thank God we did.
The atmosphere does not scream Italian restaurant. It’s chic and clean and trendy. The colors were beautiful. The music was also great. Not too loud but also not to the point where you were struggling to hear it.
The food was DELICIOUS. The menu is small and I can appreciate that. Pick a few thing and make them great and the serving size was just right. No one wants to deal with leftovers that often just take up room in the fridge OR WORSE, you just eat it all because you don’t want to waste it and then regret it.
It’s also not your typical menu with things like chicken and veal parm. It’s got different things. I had the spaghetti and clams and my dining partner had rigatoni bolognese. DELISH!! The rigatoni was perfectly Al dente. The clams in my dish were the tasty little ones and plenty of them.
Our waiter was the bartender! I forgot his name but he was great as was everyone else who popped in in us.
Lastly, my favorite part. Our waiter gave such a nice compliment to one of the members of the team who was clearing things off the table in between courses and drinks. I loved that! There wa a nice vibe between ALL the staff. They seemed to appreciate each other. Nice and refreshing to see that.
I give it 10/10!!
Had a wonderful experience tonight celebrating our anniversary. I have a ton of dietary restrictions and eating out is generally a pain for me, but Thompson’s went out of their way to make a dish for me that met all my requirements and was still so delicious. Special thanks to chef Hector! Our waiter Franklin was awesome too. Thank you!
