Unlike Jameson's standard whiskey, which is aged for four years, 18 Year spends nearly two decades maturing in a combination of American and European oak barrels. The whiskey is then finished in first-fill bourbon barrels, where it takes on flavors of vanilla, toffee, wood, leather, and spice. The whiskey is bottled at 40% alcohol by volume, and is presented in individually numbered bottles.

The thing to look for in Talisker, as with all smoky whiskies, is sweetness that give the requisite balance to the drying effect of smoke. Underneath Talisker's smoke, which ain't as all-pervading as Lagavulin, is a sweet pear-like quality. When young there are notes of the land: heather, moor, sweet seaweed, and a finish that has a distinctive cracked black pepper hit.

This whisky was aged in Japanese Mizunara oak barrels from Ariake. Even in Japan, Mizunara-aged whisky is uncommon due to the limited availability of the wood and extremely high cost of the barrels.

The whiskey is a darker amber color compared to some other scotch whisky, with just a little more color than normal. It also smells a little richer than usual --- the typical notes of honey and vanilla are there, but there is also a bit of darker plum (probably from the sherry casks) and apple crispness thrown in for good measure.

The nose is quite a delight, chocolatey and raisin-heavy, without the dominating wood profile of the 2013 Abraham Bowman bottling referenced above.
