Surprisingly, this was the worst experience I have had at Starbucks and the irony of it all is, it wasn’t over a product rather the service I received. It was a question. I came in to complete some paperwork and asked for the WiFi password. To which the young woman replied that they didn’t have WiFi in this Starbucks. Okay, so be it, right? I’m on the university campus, surely the school has WiFi? So I ask and she says she “doesn’t know, figure it out.” I was appalled and perplexed because I had no idea where this attitude came from. I was so happy to see people on campus that I had just complimented them my first trip thru and came back to have a coffee and complete my financial aid requests. I was in a good mood, excited to be taking a step forward in my education and used today to handle loose ends. I addressed her absence of professionalism to which she shrugged and I was offended at this point because this was unnecessary. Then I added that the service was trash and uncalled for and she shrugged nonchalantly with a smirk as to laugh again. I am honestly embarrassed that I even allowed this clearly unprofessional and poor attitude having person brought me to her level. More than anything I am upset that asking for a WiFi password was that big of a deal. I told the manager and once he came in I heard her voice change to the “great service” worker that he is use to but that’s not what she displayed to me and I have never met this woman. This was my first time at the campus since it opened. Mood killer to say the least but for the sake of accountability, I think it’s important to note that just because it’s a shortage of workers out there, customer service providers should not sacrifice quality for labor. I am all for redemption so I stayed quietly to give it time hoping maybe she would think about how poorly she acted, and even in the presence of her manager whom she turned up the volume and bubbly personality for, apologize. It’s about respect not power. When you have employees who treat people rudely it’s a bad look. No thanks Starbucks, you’ve lost a solid customer.
