I saw a lot of great reviews for this Cuban restaurant, so while I was in New Haven, I had to check it out. The food was ok, but not everything on the menu was available. The drinks were good, very strong. The restaurant is small, very small. The service was great, very polite, all smiles, and very accommodating. I would definitely go back to try other items on the menu. Parking can be a nightmare, but they have a lot of paid parking on the street.
Great meal. Everything was fresh, arrived in a timely manner, the waitress made sure we were taken care of without being intrusive. The atmosphere was cozy. But most of all everything was delicious!
Chris was an awesome waiter. Super helpful with questions we had about the menu. Drinks were delicious. Kage tag teamed with Chris and was really nice and attentive. Overall great experience.
Honestly, I’m surprised at how bad the food was. The croquettes were cold on the inside. Not warm, not cool….but cold. We got 3 meals, and all were pretty bad. I got a piece of dry salmon plopped onto a plate with a scoop of plain, unseasoned white rice and mediocre green beans. No sauce, no glaze…just a salted and peppered piece of dry fish. We got the driest pork ever and the blandest chicken thigh. Our side of (unseasoned) rice was $6, and mildly seasoned (1/4 cup) beans $5. I’m not sure if it was an off night, a new chef, a back up chef or what but honestly the food was kind of embarrassingly bad. The waitress was nice, the wine was good, the plastic cups were a little cheapy, the atmosphere was pleasant but the TV program showing a man carrying a live pig with a rope to get slaughtered isn’t my idea of a relaxing ambiance. Why is there a TV in there anyway, it’s supposed to be a nice place. I don’t know, this experience just wasn’t a good one. Edited to add: I appreciate your very professional response and find that refreshing. Out of curiosity, I took a look at some more recent reviews and see some similar words being said regarding food. I am hopeful that you (management?) will be able to bring it back to what it used to be. I’ve been there years ago, and it was good then. After reading the other comments, I’d like to add that though our waitress was nice…she wasn’t very good. She made mistakes, forgot some things we asked for and charged us for the still frozen croquettes. If you’re working on the food, hopefully you can help with the staff too. I would love to give sol de Cuba another chance, but I’m going to wait a while to give some time until then…thanks
The whole staff was either drunk or high my potato ball came out frozen yes frozen the girl had the audacity to say oh we won’t charge you for that my son had a pork belly chicharon it was raw and we ate a lot of it before we notice she then brought out my other son chicken tenders and they were uncooked and raw in the middle my wife had pernil with no flavor and some old leftover Cuban rice at that point we ask for the bill and left no one finished there food at alllllllll and they still charged us $75 oh and my soda was flat she took it back and brought me a hot one back I like to tip well so the money is never an issue never again will I go here or let anybody I know go here either the cook was a black guy that apparently was drunk horrible experience now me and my son have food poisoning
Chris was a great host. We had a lovely time Service was lovely and an intimate vibe for a parent+child night out on a Tuesday!
They charged me 30$ for 2 Cuban sandwiches and both sandwiches barely any meat in them could’ve took the meat out the other sandwich and it still wouldn’t have been enough they made better sanwiches when they were in Norwalk and I drove 25 minutes away to get these sandwiches and all for nothing it was very disappointing I will never buy those sandwichez again!!
