Gattinara, in the northwest of piedmont, produces nebbiolo more elegant & refined in style than barolo in the south. The intriguing bottle shape keeps the sediment from going into the glass when poured & tinted to protect the wine from light while aging. It is also rumored to have been shaped for the hand of the pope who was evidently a fan so he could still pour in his old age. Plum & berries with licorice, vanilla, spices, undergrowth, rose & violet.
