It’s fuller and funkier than the other wine before you. The second is an aligoté from Bader-Mimeur. While 95% of white Burgundy is chardonnay, the aligoté varietal makes up the remaining 5% of production. Full transparency: I’ve tried dozens of aligotés in my career, and not one was worth writing home about. But rest assured, when I tasted this one, I broke out the stationery and stamps!

      The most recognizable wine region in Spain is Rioja. Spaniards prefer their Rioja reds fully mature, so much so that there are three designations, each requiring different aging periods before release: Crianza (24 months), Reserva (36 months), and Gran Reserva (60 months!). However, a new movement is emerging, with a few rebellious wineries opting to release their Tempranillo fresh. Here, we present two quality Riojas: a 2019 Crianza and a super fresh 2021. Is the movement justified?

      This past summer, we featured the inaugural 2021 release of this Paso Robles Cabernet. Because it behaves as a balanced, ‘heat-tolerant’ cabernet, that inaugural vintage was served all summer long. Now we are featuring the second release, the 2022 vintage—for it slaps even harder than the first! This new vintage is better suited for chillier days: its flavor profile seems to have donned a heavier coat of dark fruit and mocha thickness. This wine is bundled up and ready for the temperatures to head south.

      Bordeaux can be tricky! Finding wines that truly rock in relation to their price can be quite a challenge. Here are two being featured that meet the high standards we set at Milly’s. One is a 2019 vintage from Clos St. Anne in the Cadillac sub-region of the Côtes de Bordeaux. It's 90% Merlot and is drinking youthfully, with vibrant fruit that really shines. The other is the 2018 Château Loudenne from the Médoc region of Bordeaux, and is twice the price. It’s also drinking quite youthfully but is full and on-point. Can you identify the more expensive wine?

      Malbec is most often associated with Argentina. However, the birthplace for the varietal is actually the French commune of Cahors, France. First, we have Austin Hope Cabernet Sauvignon from Paso Robles, California—a true benchmark for the region. This wine has even outshined ultra-boutique bottles priced at $300 or more. The other is from Napa and is made by Jesse Fox of Sequoia Grove, who joined the winery two years ago after previously being at Harlan Estates, where bottles command thousands of dollars. The 2021 Sequoia Grove has that dustiness typical of Rutherford wines. Can you taste the Rutherford dust and find Austin’s hope?
