FRUITIVE, is an organic, vegan, mostly take-a-way eatery. Fruitive opened it's door in 2012, when Gregg Rozeboom "created a place where his family could come and enjoy a healthy meal."
Gregg's tiny eatery projects a British library feel. On your left, library stacks fill the wall. Vegan treats are displayed across the center of the room. The order counter is ahead, on the far right. The "librarian," cashier, and hostess, Catherine, is friendly and knowledgeable.
Catherine suggested the spicy Tuscan Kale Wrap, an over-sized, whole wheat tortilla that's stuffed with minced, organic vegetables. (butternut squash, sweet potatoes, broccoli, quinoa, garbanzo beans, caramelized onions, basil pesto mayo, hummus, black and cayenne pepper). The wrap is lightly toasted before serving.
There is a large selection of vegan drinks. My choice is freshly brewed, lemon-ginger tea. The combination is quite filling and delicious.
Fruitive is a compact cafe. Inside, seating a couple of tables, and on stools, at a narrow, bar height counter, that hugs the street and patio windows. Outside, are a half dozen, or so, wheelchair accessible tables. Washroom use requires a code.
This is a unique, wonderful, vegan, gluten free eatery. If you're in DC, don't miss it.
UPDATE: As my home is on the West Coast visiting DC is not a frequent event. So my first breakfast was at Fruitive. I ordered the Cinnamon Apple Waffle which contains apples, candied, finely chopped almonds, whipped coconut cream, cinnamon, and pure maple syrup. Chef Anna cooks the waffle until the edge is crisp and the center is tender. Deliciously sweet. The whipped coconut cream is a pleasant surprise. Highly recommended.
This establishment is truly exceptional. The ambience is remarkable, and the layout is exceptionally appealing. The cuisine is also of high quality, offering a wide variety of delectable smoothies.
Great little vegan spot. Small menu, but the food is delicious & healthy. Employees are friendly, & the owner is very nice & always greets customers with a big smile.
I've tried the PB no J açai bowl (sub for almond butter), waffle, quesadilla, plant burger, southwest salad. My favorites are the plant burger & PB no J açai bowl. Great place for a healthy breakfast or lunch when in city center.
I recently tried the veggie pizza for dinner. The homemade sour dough crust was delicious. And I'm always amazed at the vegan cheese. It tastes just like normal cheese to me.
The beet faster juice is very refreshing on a hot summer day.
I really appreciate the thoughtfulness put into the interior design & decor as well. Feels like you're inside a small, well appointed library. The restroom is very clean & also decorated cutely with colorful floor tiles.
I ate a sweet berry waffle and it was delicious I enjoyed it very much. Employees’ service was great, however, I noticed that the employees seem suffocated and work in overwhelming heat due to the fact that the AC may not be working. Other customers noticed as well. Hopefully managers take action and look into this issue. I look forward to visiting again soon. Other than that, this place is great!
We really like this place. The food is great, and there are terrific vegan options. This is 3 days eating here in a row.
Order the breakfast burrito. Doesn't matter the time of day. Just order the breakfast burrito, and you will understand.
