Collected from micro-growers across a half-dozen villages in the mountainous region of Quiché Guatemala, these are the beans that launched Downtown CREDO. They awakened the conviction that coffee can be a thread of impact across oceans and cultural barriers. Organized by our friend Walter (who’s working on development efforts in the region) and imported through a colleague, we buy this coffee as directly as possible. We met José through Dr. Conway at Rollins College. In 2017 our founding partner Ben traveled to Chiapas, Mexico to meet José and see the way direct trade relationships improve the quality of life in the villages where José works. What he found was a collaborative effort between the Rainforest Alliance, Heifer International, and Toks Restaurant Group to improve production and quality of life. We’re excited to support their work by buying their coffee. We became the first to bring their beautiful volcano grown coffee into the US. This coffee comes to us through our friend Emil. His family runs a mill in Honduras (mills facilitate the final preparation of coffee beans on behalf of growers who don’t have the means to prepare it themselves). He imports coffee for them, and brings the coffee up from Miami in the back of his pickup for us every couple of months. Emil’s family is a philanthropic force in the region in solidarity with the growers they serve. By buying coffee from them we’re able to join in their work.
