This is such an eclectic restaurant. I love the theme and the ambiance. I ordered a steak Medium Rare, which is difficult to accomplish at several restaurants, and it came out perfect. The asparagus, one of my favorite vegetables, was roasted to just the right consistency. I would 100% recommend eating here.
We were in Cincinnati for my birthday and had booked with Carlo & Johnny based on TripAdvisor lists of great restaurants in Cincy. We were not disappointed! Our dinner was fabulous. We split the crab bisque and each portion was as big as an individual portion in other restaurants. It was delicious. We both had boneless ribeyes, which were fantastic, and we had roasted carrots and brussel sprouts. The steaks were the best I've had in quite a while, but dessert may have trumped them. I had butter pie with their homemade cookies & cream ice cream. The ice cream was to die for, and the pie was also fantastic. My husband had ricotta donuts, which he loved. The place is deceptively large, but you still have some privacy, and our server was great. We would absolutely go back.
I had the good fortune of being a guest at a company dinner recently. I was blown away by the atmosphere / decor, the service and the food. You are immediately brought a basket of bread made from a nearby bakery. It was very good, with a choice butter. The party that I was with ordered several different appetizers (they're large enough to share). I enjoyed the raw oysters, I had (2) from the East Coast & (2) from the West Coast. Both were very good, the West Coast being a little larger and the East Coast being more tasty. Served with a few different sauces, tabasco, cocktail and raw horse radish. I topped them off with the horse radish - I like a little heat. I think that generally, East Coast shellfish tends to be better (cold waters). I also had the Grilled Brussels Sprouts ( cooked a honey chili glaze, bacon lardons & crispy onion). They were excellent. The wedge salad was also a good choice (I ordered a half, which was plenty). Very tasty, even topped off with a small piece of thick cut bacon. A good set-up for what came next. The real show stopper was the steak. I should say the menu offered a lot of different options, I'm certain any selection would be delectable. I enjoyed the "Cowboy Steak", a 22 oz bone-in ribeye. I ordered it medium rare. It was perfectly cooked to order, but this might be a steak you'd want to order rare. Still, it was exquisite. The seasoning was perfect, likely the best tasting steak I've had. I concluded my meal with the Three Layer Carrot Cake. Which was also very good. It's a massive piece of cake that I sadly, couldn't finish. For drink, I enjoyed the house Jeff Ruby IPA (from Taft's Brewing Company). It came in a can, poured into a glass. Nothing on tap. The beer had great flavor, a hint of orange peel and very smooth for an IPA. Our party also enjoyed a Cabernet Sauvignon - Bella Union. Not too sweet & not too dry. There was a team serving our table and they were extremely attentive. I believe that our host / head server was named Chris. He was top notch. Friendly, attentive and very informed about the menu. If you're looking for a special dining experience at a place often described as "opulent dining" with no pretense, they absolutely live up to their reputation.
My husband and I dined at this location for our first time tonight. We went to the downtown location last year to celebrate our marriage. We decided to make it a yearly tradition for our anniversary to visit a Jeff Ruby steakhouse after that. We loved the history and character at this location. The band and the decor and just the overall atmosphere was so much more than we expected. As always the service was phenomenal, Sarah B was our server and she went above and beyond to make our anniversary special. She explained the menu and made excellent suggestions, kept drinks on the table and full, and so much more. She made sure to help us get a picture together in the tunnel before we left. I was also so impressed with the little history paper she sent home about the building. We always have a great experience at any Jeff Ruby location and are excited to continue our tradition of celebrating our marriage with you all!
We had a wonderful, private dinner event at Carlo & Johnny last weekend. There were 11 of us in our party and most of us had never been to C&J before (we live in Hyde Park and typically frequent the Precinct and Ruby’s locations). We loved our first experience at C&J. This historic property was beautiful and well-appointed, the service was top notch, and as always, the steaks were terrific and the wine list was extensive! It was a great evening in the burbs!
Another of Jeff Ruby's world-class eateries. Everything, here, oozes of classic opulence & nostalgia...From the valet parking to the attention to detail in each bite of the steak,, Carlo & Johnny exceeds your expectations of what Fine Dining should be. The prices aren't for the faint of heart, nor the light in the wallet. Be ready to enjoy some of the best food in the Tri-State area and forget about what it costs....just treat yourself & indulge in culinary excellence.
My first time. Ambiance from entrance to seating was impressive with the decor. My request was granted with no problems where to sit, since I arrived early from reservations. What it lacked for me was the cleanliness, dust was visible from seating to bathroom. Service was fair, but could have been better with attendance, and did not receive that experience til the end of dinner. Food is what U see here on the photo, too much salt on everything, noodles were not cooked well. I did like the mashed potato & corn.
Absolutely amazing. From the food to the service. Best steak I have ever had.
The service was wild. Our waiter could’ve given a masterclass in catering to the whims of the over-privileged. Plus, there were so many assistant servers buzzing around, it felt like a beehive in tuxedos. The manager even checked on us, which was nice considering we were basically paying his rent. Bobbie ordered a shrimp cocktail appetizer with prawns the size of small lobsters. Ironically, she prefers the dinky ones from the grocery store. Go figure. Our half salads were...well, half salads. Nothing to write a Yelp epic about. For the main event, we both went with filet mignon. Bobbie got the “petite” cut named after Anthony Munoz. Since when is an NFL legend considered petite? Still, the steak was tasty. I got the barrel cut filet, ordered medium. It arrived closer to ‘blue mooing on the plate’, but I’m not picky. The dogs certainly weren’t complaining about the leftovers. We also split some charred Brussels sprouts (overrated) and a loaded baked potato (underwhelming). But then, the waiter tempted us with tales of the legendary Butter Pie. Calories? What calories? We shared a piece, and let me tell you, THAT was the highlight. So good, I considered licking the plate like a Labrador. Overall, a memorable experience I’d never pay for myself. If anyone out there feels like playing culinary sugar daddy/mama, we’re totally available. Otherwise, I’ll stick to perfecting my steaks at home with my trusty sous vide. After all, no steak is worth a month of eating ramen.
