Akbar's Birmingham

This was our first visit back to Akbars since my wife moved away from birmingham around 10 years ago. Staff welcoming us and serving were second to none, couldn't fault them at all. In general the food was good, however I was put off by some really chewy chicken pieces in my balti. Atmosphere wise, the outside of the restaurant really needs work, car park has various things dumped around in it, the planters outside are very tatty and inside, the chairs in the waiting area are shabby and falling apart.

We can never fault the food, and again was faultless. Akbar's does the BEST naan's, perfect curries and fab other sides. No complaint on this. We have been going to Birmingham Akbar's for years and has was always the go to for a great atmosphere and dining experience, however last night it was very different. No dimmed lighting, music only came on after 9, and although very busy, the ambience and attention to detail was poor. It felt more like a community hall than a restaurant. Sloppy service with dishes sat in sauce on the table and a very strange plastic jug for table water was used, which was simply laughable. The decor has deteriorated so much;l as well; me and my wife were shocked at how poor the conditions of the leather seats, battered tables and the restaurant looks as if it hasn't seen a lick of paint for a long time. This restaurant is really resting on its laurels now and needs to up it's game! It's a good job the food is still ace as the rest of our visit was poor.

Visited here to taste their rabbit dish. It wasn't too busy at the time yet the waiting time was a bit long. The food was alright, nothing to write home about. The rabbit dish I had, tasted like chicken. I heard rabbit tastes like chicken so I'll have to give them the benefit of the doubt. The portion sizes weren't great neither. The atmosphere wasn't too bad, it was quite lively and had some entertainment. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to anyone I know I know in Birmingham, but at the same time, I won't stop anyone visiting who wish to give them ago. Dietary restrictions: They do have halal options, or so they say. Kid-friendliness: Family friendly, they'll sing happy birthday to your kid or adults who haven't embraced adulthood yet.
